MTNA is the best investment you can make to help you realize
your full potential as a music teaching professional.
Networking
MTNA is made up of nearly 24,000 independent and collegiate music
teachers like you in all fifty states and the District of Columbia.
The size and geographical span of the organization makes MTNA
a powerful alliance and provides a collective voice for music-teaching
professionals. The MTNA network will provide you with camaraderie,
support and new ideas.
Music Study Awards, Studio Festivals
and Music Achievement Awards
This multiple-phase initiative focuses on the needs of the “everyday”
music student. It is open to students of all ages and levels to
motivate them in their musical studies. The first phase, the MTNA
Music Study Award, is designed to nationally recognize your students
with two to twelve years of music study. The awards are aimed
at inspiring students to continue their music education, whether
or not they intend on making music a career.
The second phase, the MTNA Studio Festival Program, will provide
your students with an opportunity for performance in a noncompetitive
atmosphere. Participating students will be supportively critiqued
by you, as well as a musician of your own choosing. Each student
will receive national recognition, while being offered incentive
for practice and selection of challenging repertory.
Finally, MTNA’s Music Achievement Award encourages all
students to continue their music study and strive to achieve goals
that will not only help them become better musicians, but also
will enhance their love and appreciation of music. Students completing
the program are rewarded for their achievement with a special
MTNA pin.
National Conference
The MTNA national conference, held annually, brings together
the most representative cross-section of the MTNA membership.
At the national conference you will be given the opportunity to
attend master classes, technology and informational sessions,
Pedagogy Saturday, the exhibit hall, evening concerts and much
more. National competitions finals take place at the national
conference and feature the outstanding performances of students
in all instrument areas as well as composition.
American Music Teacher Magazine
American Music Teacher is MTNA’s bimonthly, professional
journal. As an MTNA member you will receive a subscription with
your membership. AMT’s purpose is to provide you with articles,
reviews and regular columns that inform, educate and challenge
music teachers and foster excellence in the music teaching profession.
AMT will motivate you and keep you up to date on the latest music
teaching advances.
Professional Certification
The MTNA Professional Certification Program provides you with
prestige, recognition and the potential for student recruitment
and increased earning power while allowing you to enhance your
professional status. This program exists to improve the level
of professionalism within the field of applied music teaching
and will help the public readily identify you as a competent applied
music teacher in their community.
National Student Competitions
The MTNA National Student Competitions are the most successful
and prestigious student competitions in the country. Sponsored
by leading music corporations, these competitions attract the
finest performers in piano, strings, voice, woodwinds, brass,
organ, guitar and chamber music, as well as composition.

Zoning Information
Over the years, zoning issues have been a concern for independent
music teachers with home-based studios. MTNA understands these
issues and can provide you with a Zoning Guide that explains how
to prevent and deal with situations that may occur. MTNA can also
offer support on behalf of the community of music teachers who
are members. For more info e-mail mtnanet@mtna.org
Grant Opportunities
The MTNA Foundation fund awards grants annually to music teachers
and MTNA-affiliated local associations at the MTNA national conference.
Teacher enrichment grants are provided to music teachers for private
study, specific college-level course work or other projects that
will enhance the performing and teaching skills of the applicant.
Local association grants are awarded to assist funding projects
that provide educational and professional development opportunities
for teachers. Grants are also given for projects that support
the promotion of music in the immediate community.
